Texas Style Council 2013 Summer School Schedule*

Below you'll find an overview of our full schedule. Mix and match session offerings to create a curriculum that is perfect for your goals- on your blog, in your business, or in your life, in general. Workshops are tagged as BLOG SCHOOL (specific for bloggers), BUSINESS SCHOOL (specific for businesses and brands), GEN ED (good for anyone), or DIY (craft classes). 


FRIDAY, AUGUST 2

EARLY REGISTRATION & SWAP DROP-OFF, HAPPY HOUR, + CLOTHING & BOOK SWAP MIXER IN THE 2ND STREET DISTRICT.
NOON- 10 PM

SWAP DROP-OFF & HEAD OF THE CLASS REGISTRATION
All registered attendees should bring two amazing clothing items and one book to swap with other attendees. All items will be marked with your blog or business name and social media channels, so bring something previously loved but in near mint condition. Please, no accessories. Book should be in decent condition and something you yourself enjoyed. Drop off items between NOON and 6PM so that we can tag, organize, and hang items. While there, meet our staff and pick up your TxSC Summer School badge and 2nd Street shopping pass. Unable to make it by 6PM? Hand your items off to a friend, ship to them us prior to the conference, or bring your items anyway. Swapping will last until 10 PM. [map]

SMART STYLE SWAP PRESENTED BY LULUS.COM // 237 W. 2nd St.
All swappers will leave with two new-to-her items and one new-to-her book. Lulus.com will be seeding the swap with 250 brand new items, so get there early to find these treasures. This isn't one of those chaotic grab and go swaps. This is a chance to thoughtfully select items that you'll actually wear, tweet your new finds, meet new people, and make trades throughout the night. Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky will help you style your new-to-you treasures, and Julie from 2nd Street and Stephanie from Lulu*s will welcome you. Sip on a special cocktail featuring some Texas heat and Treaty Oak Platinum libations

    You often hear that in order to have a successful blog, you have to fall into a "niche" category. This workshop is about why that's not necessarily true. Jenni will teach you to craft a beautiful and successful blog showcasing the one thing you have that no one else does: your own unique lifestyle!

    InstaTweet Your PinFace Like a Brand. There are so many social media options out there, how in the world do you manage it all?     Your blog can be a creative outlet, personal journal, social platform... and it can be a source of income, too! Bethany will give you the scoop on how to make money from your blog. She'll covers affiliates, ad networks, direct sales, and sidebar ads. Come with your questions!

    led by Carli, owner of Inked Fingers

    Pepperologie: Creating Real-Life Experiences to Enhance Your Existing Brand. Are you feelin’ meh because you think your life isn’t interesting enough to write about or document via social media? Don’t worry! Jessie of Style & Pepper will give you all the pointers you need to spice up your life and enhance your existing brand.
  • C- BLOG SCHOOL // SELF PHOTOGRAPHY 101
    led by Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky, presented by Lulu*s
    Me, Myself and Tripod: Learn how to take gorgeous self portraits using natural light and a tripod. Covers composition, lighting, and affordable tools that will help you document outfit of the day photographs and lifestyle self-portraits. Please bring your camera and tripod, if possible.

Drop in any time to ask Linda Eliasen your design questions. Grab an Honest Tea and a Kind bar and sit down one-on-one to have your site looked over by a talented young designer whose impressive roster of clients include MailChimp, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Squarespace. NOTE: the DESIGN LAB runs at the same time as our SHOP TOUR and LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS, so attendees may not be able to participate in all three, unless they provide their own transportation. 

SHOP TOUR- meet in Hyatt Regency hotel lobby
12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Board our TxSC buses for a fun four hours of shopping. We'll spend the first half thrifting and doing a thrift store tutorial. The second half of the trip will be shopping and styling with some of your favorite bloggers. Seats are limited, so please arrive on time to sign-up and board. NOTE: the SHOP TOUR runs at the same time as our LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS and DESIGN LAB, so attendees may not be able to participate in all three, unless they provide their own transportation.

THRIFT FIELD TRIP AND WORKSHOP AT SAVERS

led by Jentine of My Edit, presented by Savers
Jentine will be giving a mini 'lecture' on how to up your thrift game. She'll cover the basics of navigating a thrift store, as well as some advanced techniques on how to find quality, the practical issue of how to clean and sort thrift store finds, and of course, how to have fun and see potential. After the lecture, you will have a giant Savers store to test out your new thrift muscle. 

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
The buses will depart Savers at 2:00 and split up. One bus will go to Moss Designer Consignment for the Fashion Loves People pop-up shop with Alyson Fox first, while the other bus will go to Ragalicious Vintage to check out some of Austin’s finest vintage first. Buses will switch half way through so both buses will go to both shops. Brought to you by PayPal's Cash For Registers.

AMA'S, DIY's, + LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS- The Hyatt Regency Downtown Austin

These workshops, unless noted, work for anyone. Learn a new skill or craft to improve your creative life or career. NOTE: the LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS run at the same time as our DESIGN LAB and SHOP TOUR, so attendees may not be able to participate in all three unless they provide their own transportation.

    Inspired by Stitched Gifts, come learn how to craft adorable embroidered gifts. These are hip and modern-- not your grandma's stitched gifts at all. All supplies provided by Kollabora. No previous embroidery skills necessary.

    led by Eric & Kelsey Williams of Words of Williams, presented by You Need a Budget
    Let’s face it, most of us love shopping. Monetarily this can get pretty dangerous-- Confessions of a Shopaholic, anyone?-- but creating a budget can help prevent even Rebecca Bloomwood from spending her life savings on fancy clothes. Eric and Kelsey are experts at personal budgeting, even culling shoe addictions (Eric’s). They’ll reveal how to create and stay motivated to stick to a budget, helping you pay off debt and reach your life goals. They promise that budgeting does NOT have to be boring.

  • C-  GEN ED // BIG IMPACT PUBLIC RELATIONS ON A MICRO BUDGET
    led by Lisa, co-owner of Newton O'Neill Communications
    “Public Relations” is an intimidating phrase, especially to freshmen business owners and bloggers. How does a newby make a big splash in the infinite depths of the Internet? Lisa will spill her secrets of how to get real results on a modest (or nearly non-existent) budget.

    Let's show off you! Learn how to craft a media kit that will succinctly and stylishly show off your accomplishments. Bloggers-- brands that are interested in working with you will ask for it. Brands--  market yourself for your potential wholesale clients and customers.

In 2007 Elsie started A Beautiful Mess as a just-for-fun blog. Little by little, creating articles became her passion. In early 2010 Emma started contributing ideas and recipes to A Beautiful Mess and became a co-author of a year later. Shortly after Emma joined ABM full-time, they got their first book deal and later developed an incredibly popular photo app. Emma & Elsie continue to inspire people world-wide with their creativity and will share some of their insights with TxSC.

As personal digital publishers there’s a lot of sharing... and sometimes quite a bit of over-sharing! Let's talk about finding your boundaries and keeping your kids in a playful place on your online entities.

    led by Janette of Fashion Loves People & Merl Kenzie
    Ethical, eco-friendly, fair trade, socially responsible... these have all become buzz words after the garment factory collapse in Bangladesh, causing many consumers to question and alter their own shopping habits.     The average American woman is a size 14. More US women report wearing a size 16 dress than those who wear sizes 0 and 2 combined.     led by Jen of Jen Loves Kev, presented by Yoked
    Let’s face it-- people can be mean. From mean girls in high school to anonymous commenters on your blog, it takes a special talent to stand tall in the midst of your critics. Often, mean commenters can put a damper on your day (or week!) and could make you want to stop blogging completely! Jen will talk about how to differentiate between nasty insults and valid critiques, as well as how to handle your haters and self-criticisms with confidence. And what if your worst critic if yourself? Well, she's going to cover that, too.
  • 3- BUSINESS SCHOOL // CRAWLING OUT OF YOUR RUT
    led by Julie Edmonson
    Based on her Break the Mold strategy sessions, this workshop helps seasoned business owners pinpoint their business' shortcomings and tackles those issues head-on. This hands-on workshop will work through a strategy handbook to flesh out the problems, look for opportunities and detail ways to break through the chaos and leverage it to reach new heights.

    led by Julie of Orchid Grey
    The modern woman wears many hats-- working girl, supermom, supportive housewife, fashionable and crafty wonderwoman... how can a gal be expected to have any free time on top of that?! Meet Julie. She somehow manages a job as a blog and fashion writer for a large online retailer, a marriage, a killer blog, AND having the best hair in North America. She’s a leading expert on how to manage your time, blog content, and sanity.

    Kendi will give an honest portrait of starting her own business venture and balancing her popular blog. She says, "I'll share my experience (mistakes), wisdom (quotes I read on Pinterest), and stories I probably shouldn't tell in public on how I went from a blog to a brick and mortar and online boutique." 
  • 2- HOT TOPIC DISCUSSIONS // BLOGGING COLORFULLY: DIVERSITY IN THE BLOGOSPHERE
    led by Mattie of Mattieologie & founder of Style Bloggers of Color, presented by CourseCraft
    Blogging is a way for every woman to express herself and showcase her individuality. Mattie will show us how to use being different in the blogosphere as an advantage in brand partnerships, networking with other bloggers, and increasing readership.
  • 3- BUSINESS SCHOOL //  BUILDING A BUSINESS IN THE MOBILE AGE
    led by Ian, founder of Rocket Mobile
    One in four Americans only use a smartphone to connect to the internet (not a computer), and there are five times as many cell phones in the world as their are PCs. The need for mobile marketing is undeniable. Ian is the Managing Partner & Founder at Rocket Mobile. Rocket builds and designs mobile experiences for clients all over the world and is the company that helped create the massively popular #ABeautifulMess App. Questions answered: Do I need a mobile app? Do I need a mobile website? Is creating an app expensive? What's the process?
  • 4- BLOG SCHOOL // FROM BLOG TO BOOK
    led by Becky of Chipper Things and author of "I'd Rather Be Short" and Megan of Greetings from TX and author of "99 Problems But a Baby Ain't One"
    Getting published is a lot of work, but not impossible. Learn how to use your blog to assist long-term goals, like getting a book deal. Becky will cover working with a literary agent and landing a book deal, whereas Megan will cover working with a publisher directly.

Don't miss out on our final, general session where we'll answer any last questions and celebrate a TxSC Summer School graduation. Moderated by Jessie from Style & Pepper. Capstone panel includes Indiana- TxSC founder and creative director, Emma from A Beautiful Mess, Kendi from Kendi Everyday, Julie from Orchid Grey, Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky, Tieka from Selective Potential, Janette from Fashion Loves People, Moorea Seal, Jenni from Story of My Life, and Mattie from Mattieologie.
